Traveling is a wonderful way to explore new places, immerse oneself in different cultures, and create lasting memories. One such destination that has gained popularity in recent years is Bacalar, Mexico. Honestly, I discovered Bacalar through an Instagram post! This place needs NO filters. Known for its stunning turquoise lagoon, rich history, and vibrant local culture, Bacalar offers a unique and unforgettable travel experience. We really loved being on the water in Bacalar and took every opportunity to dive into the clear waters.

Bacalar, Mexico, is a hidden gem that has captivated the hearts of many travelers. Its pristine lagoon, known as the “Lake of Seven Colors,” is a sight to behold. I didn’t realize until we were swimming that there are actually very few fish and it’s fresh water. So if you’re someone who doesn’t like to swim because they can’t see their feet… this is the PERFECT place for you.

Bacalar’s main attraction is undoubtedly its breathtaking lagoon. The crystal-clear waters, varying shades of blue, and the presence of stromatolites create a mesmerizing spectacle. Travelers can indulge in various water activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply lounging on a boat while admiring the stunning surroundings. The lagoon’s tranquility and untouched beauty make it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

The beauty of Bacalar’s lagoon can be witnessed by taking a boat tour. As the boat glides through the calm waters, visitors can witness the varying shades of blue and the unique stromatolites, which are living fossils. The experience of swimming in the lagoon’s crystal-clear waters is truly unforgettable. I highly recommend the 3.5 hour sailing tour. (Click the link above to go directly to the tour we booked) We had an awesome time on our journey and it was exceptionally personal. It’s also SUPER affordable at just $50. To catch the boat it’s an easy taxi ride –or bike ride from town if you’re feeling adventurous.

On your tour there are a few highlights but my favorite was the canal of the pirates. It was utilized as a secret hideout for pirates in the 17th and 18th century. Currently there is a narrow stretch of water and a sunken boat that are worth swimming out to.

Nearby is a true paradise for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts: Isla de los Pajaros (Bird island). This small but stunning island forms a truly unique and special ecosystem important to Bacalar. It was a pleasure to swim nearby for a few minutes while enjoying snacks from our tour. While we tied up, there were a handful of tourists on paddleboards and kayaks that ventured from nearby waterfront hotels as this island is very accessible from the nearby shore.

We opted to stop by the Cenote Negro which is shockingly deep but appropriately named. There are other cenotes nearby that are worth a visit including Cenote Azul and Cenote Cocalitos.

You really shouldn't miss an evening on the water if you can. It was certainly a highlight of our trip.
